Scary News About Teen Girls Who Date

Nearly one in five sexually active teenage girls in the United States say they have been physically abused by a date in the past year, Reuters reports of a study released by the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass.

These same girls are also more likely than other teen girls to become pregnant or engage in risky sexual behaviors, such as having more than one partner over a short period of time.

It's not clear if abuse leads to these other problems. "A tremendous number of girls are victimized in dating relationships," the study's lead author, Dr. Jay G. Silverman, told Reuters, adding that these relationships appear to be a "critical context" in which risky sex practices and pregnancy occur. An example: If a girl has previously experienced abuse by a boyfriend, she is likely more afraid to ask him to use a condom.

The Harvard study surveyed a nationally representative sample of 6,864 female high school students. Forty-three percent said they had had sex at least one time, and of these 18 percent reported they had been hit...
